The Church On The Way Santa Clarita is a growing congregation that is founded on the understanding that God wants to meet His people today and He wants to meet them with power. It is the power of God that brings change in our lives and in our community. That power is what builds His Church and that power is what will change your life. The story of The Church On The Way Santa Clarita is one of seeing God’s power and grace move among His people. But to understand our story you must first understand the foundation on which we are built.
In 1926, a group of students from LIFE Bible School began a series of old time tent revival meetings in Van Nuys and a church was born. The First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys was birthed in revival, and it’s a revival that continues to this day.
In 1969 Jack and Anna Hayford accepted an interim position as Pastors of the First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys. It was a small congregation and in that season he introduced the concept that the church was to be about building big people, not necessarily a big church. He said,
“I see us as becoming a truly ministry-minded church. The Lord Jesus Christ is our center. The Word of God is our base. The Holy Spirit, filling us to extend the servant life of Jesus outward, that’s our objective…this will not be a pastor-centered ministry, but a people-centered ministry."
Shortly thereafter, the Lord impressed a promise to the church that “I have given my glory to dwell in this place” and from that time on there was explosive growth and revival in the Church. In the next 30 years the Church expanded to 2 campuses, opened a world-wide radio and TV ministry, opened a college and seminary, and most importantly saw thousands of people come to Christ.
In 1999, Pastor Jack stepped down and Pastor Scott and Rebecca Bauer were installed as Senior Pastors and a new vision was birthed. This began to materialize in two ways.
First, there was a Spanish Speaking congregation that was birthed (La Igelsia En El Camino) and it was led by Pastor Jim Tolle. Under Pastor Tolle’s leadership it grew into the largest Spanish speaking church in the nation.
The second part of this new vision was to open a north campus in Santa Clarita that would serve as a gateway to the city of Los Angeles. We purchased the Mann Theatre Complex in the heart of Santa Clarita to fulfill the second part of the Vision. Meetings began to be held in different facilities while the renovation took place on the old Mann complex over the next seven years.
Just four years to the day of Pastor Scott’s installation, he was called home to Glory. The fall of 2004, Pastor Jim and Alice Tolle were installed as the Senior Pastors. Under their leadership the call to reach the City has powerfully increased, with new doors of influence and impact.
After obtaining the occupancy permit in March, 2007, The Church On The Way-North Campus was opened on Palm Sunday with about 400 people. It has steadily grown under the leadership of Pastors Doug and Christa Andersen.
In June 2008, Pastor Jim felt the call of the Lord to send the North Campus as a church plant to the city of Santa Clarita. On August 10, 2008 Pastor Doug and Christa and their team were installed by the district supervisor, Dr. Jack Hamilton, as the Senior Pastors of The Church On The Way Santa Clarita.
The DNA of TCOTWSC is that of her mother church. We believe that God wants to build big people, He wants to empower His church so that we (not just the pastors) can do the work of the ministry. It is an exciting time at TCOTWSC as we grow into becoming all that God has called us to be. We are honored by your desire to be involved in making a difference in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The Lord has been so faithful to us. There has been an extraordinary, ongoing work of grace. Lives have been changed, bodies healed, homes rescued, people delivered, truth perceived, love out-poured, leadership raised up, and ministry sent forth around the globe. We believe the best days are still ahead for us to the Glory and Honor of Jesus Christ.
